Introduction to Genetics

Genetics is the study of genes contained in the cells of almost all the living organisms in existence. Plants and mammals are all made up of a building block of tiny living cells.

A cell is made up of 3 main parts...
  • Nucleus.
  • Cell body.
  • Cell membrane or cell wall.
The nucleus of a cell contains many chromosomes, which are actually long strands of molecules called Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA). A gene is basically a small segment of a long DNA molecule, and genetics is the study of these genes.

Humans naturally have 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus of every cell, for an all together 46 chromosomes.
