PS3 not reading any disc after playing COD: MW2

Postby dwight_shroot on Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:01 am

I have a CECHA model PS3 which I purchased in July of 2007 and have had, up until last night, zero problems playing any PS3 or PS2 games, as well as DVD's and CD's. I have been out of town for the past 5 days and have had my PS3 turned completely off. I turned it on last night and began playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. After playing one online game which lasted about 8 min. the game froze. I was forced to do a hard restart which I have had to do only on a few occasions before but for the first time, after the light flashed like it was about to restart or turn off I was forced to again, perform a hard restart. This time the PS3 turned off like normal and I proceeded to turn it back on. The home menu came up like normal but the game did not show up. I ejected the game and put it back in but still nothing showed up nor was there any sound of the disc spinning. I tried another game and a DVD but still nothing.

Having read through a few other forums I tried reseting the system settings but still nothing. When I called and spoke with Sony he took me through the safe start-up where we tried to delete the corrupted file but still the system would not read any disc. My PS3 is of course out of warranty and I refuse to pay Sony $150 to fix something that shouldn't be broken. I have read about possibly changing the lens or even the entire blu-ray drive but am unsure yet which problem I am facing.

If you have any input on what might be the problem I would love to know. Also, I am curios as to why there have been so many people reporting the same problem after playing one of the games in the COD series. I have noticed while playing COD that the PS3 seems to be working harder than usual. Could the COD games be causing these malfunctions?

THANKS!

This is exactly the same problem I am trying to find a solution to. My ps3 has also stopped playing any form of discs after playing modernwarfare 2. It froze quite often when playing the game, so maybe the game has something to do with it. I also have the same model ps3 as you and also bough it July 2007, and what you have described is exactly what happened to me. The disc doesnt seem to be spinning, i have taken the ps3 apart twice, cleaned the lense, and i'm confused if I should buy a new laser as people in the forums are suggesting, because i'm not 100% sure that the laser may be the problem. I don't wanna buy a laser, and then replace it, only to not have it work again, and waste valuable time and money.

Let me know if you have found a solution to this yet, or any answers online

Unfortunately, you would have to open up your PS3, open up the blu-ray drive, and read the label on the side (there should be a sticker on the mount with the model number. The actual lens part may have a sticker too with a model number.)

The reason you have to do this is because on some models, midway through, Sony used different parts for the blu-ray (especially those that were defective). After you read the label with the model number, you would just check on google shopping or ebay, or whatever search engine to purchase that exact part. There should be many videos on youtube showing how to take apart your blu-ray drive (be careful with the ribbon, as that is a very delicate part and first to break). Also, DO NOT touch the lens on any circumstance, not even to clean it. Unless you have special cloth, simply touching the lens will scratch it, or leave oily residue that WILL affect blu-ray playback, which is extremely sensitive (it also needs to read double layers!). Don't even think about using tissue paper as one small wipe will render your blu-ray lens with scratches.
