Yellow Light of Death

First off I must say that the PS3 Secrets wepage is just awesome, it has everything. But I didn't see anything about the YLOD. My question is what exactly causes the ylod, no mine hasn't received it even after a year and a half. But just for curiosities sake and for possible prevention measures I wouldn't mind knowing.

So from what I understand, if something breaks within 2 years and the retailer or manufacturer claim that there is only a 1 year warranty, you just need to quote Article 5 of the EU Product Warranty Directive (1999):

HOPE this helps

It is just a general indicator of one of many many defects causing a system failure.

The YLOD usually indicates cracked solder to one of the chips in the PS3. More info on Yellow Light of Death here:

(Scroll to the Hardware faults section)

If you are brave, you can try to prevent your PS3 from ever having the YLOD in the first place by changing the power supply:

Just find a compatible power supply of a later model (which usually indicates it uses less wattage)

Note that this is unrelated to the Red Screen of Death in later Fat models:
