There are three major sound options that can be enabled to make Gnome on the Yellowdog 6.1 livlier on the PS3.
The first is enabling sound effects when you are logging in and out, launching apps, and other stuff...
From Gnome menu, go to: System->Preferences->Sound
Go to the Sounds tab
Select the "Enable software sound mixing (ESC)" and "Play system sounds" checkboxes
The second is giving a certain sound device higher priority if you should have multiple devices that are confusing the PS3.
From Gnome menu, go to: System->Administration->Soundcard Detection
Go to the Settings tab
In the "Audio cards order", move Up and Down the correct sound device that the sound should output to.
Click Apply button
The third is testing your mic and PlayStation Eye if you should have them plugged in.
From Gnome menu, go to: System->Preferences->More Preferences->Multimedia Systems Selector
In the Audio and Video tabs you can choose the correct Plugin for audio and video, and even test your mic and cam.
