StarCraft 2 Special Healing Units

Postby edepot on Fri Nov 19, 2010 10:49 pm

One of the most interesting thing about the StarCraft 2 game is the ability of the Terran race to heal or repair units and Structures. However, not all units or Structures are repairable or healable. Allies can also be healed or repaired in certain cases. The three special units are:

1) Medivac
2) SCV
3) MULE

The Medivac is a flying shuttle that can carry troops, but its special ability is being able to heal Biological units.
The SCV is a ground unit that is able to repair Mechanical unit or Structures (note that it needs to be a Mechanical unit or Mechanical Structure).
The MULE is a timed duration version of SCV that can't mine vespene gas.

Every unit and structure in SC2 has special flags associated with it. The following are these flags:
1) Mechanical
2) Biological
3) Massive
4) Structure
5) Psionic
6) Armored
7) Light

You can see these flags in the bottom center screen when you click on a unit or Structure in SC2.

These flags determine what can be repaired by SCV (or MULE), or healed by Medivac.
Any unit or Structure that is Mechanical can be repaired by a SCV/MULE (can repair things in air or on the ground)
Any unit (NOT a Structure) that is Biological can be healed by Medivac (can heal units in the air or on the ground)

SCV/MULE:
-> All Terran Structures are Mechanical, so SCV/MULE can repair them.
All Zerg Structures are Biological (not Mechanical), so SCV/MULE can't repair them.
All Protoss Structures are not Biological nor Mechanical, so SCV/MULE can't repair them.

-> All Terran Units that are Mechanical can be SCV/MULE repaired.
-> All Protoss Units that are Mechanical can be SCV/MULE repaired.
All Zerg Units are NOT Mechanical, so SCV/MULE can't repair them.

Medivac:
All Structures (Terran, Zerg, and Protoss) can't be healed by Medivac.

-> All Terran Units that are Biological can be Medivac repaired.
-> All Protoss Units that are Biological can be Medivac repaired.
-> All Zerg Units (all Biological) can be Medivac repaired.

Now for the "Special" cases.
The Medivac is actually a "Armored" and "Mechanical", so SCV/MULE can repair it (Mechanical).
The SCV is actually "Light" "Biological" and "Mechanical", so SCV/MULE and Medivac can both repair or heal it (Both "Biological" unit, and "Mechanical"). SCV/MULE can repair another SCV/MULE!
The MULE is actually "Light" and "Mechanical", so SCV/MULE can repair it.

The Medivac uses psionic energy to heal (no minerals or gas wasted).
The SCV/MULE uses minerals (and gas if the item required gas to build or upgrade) to repair Mechanical units and Structures.

Obviously, if you are playing Terran, you can use the SCV/MULE on Protoss and Terran ally's Mechanical units (Terran ally's Mechanical Structures too), or use the Medivac on Protoss, Terran, and Zerg ally's Biological units.
It is possible to control all three races at the same time, and that is to use Zerg, build Infester with Neural Parasite ability, and mind control an enemy probe or SCV (MULE can't build buildings). Use the this controlled unit to make a Command Center or Nexus. Then pump out a SCV or probe (will be in your color) and any units or Structures made with that SCV or Probe is yours. Mind controlling the SCV to build a command center is difficult, as you need a lot of Infesters to keep mind controlling a SCV to finish building the Command Center (mind control has limited duration).

SC2 related properties flags

Postby edepot on Sat Nov 20, 2010 8:40 pm

Now that we know what type of units or structures can be healed (Biological units) or repaired (Mechanical units or Structures), here is a listing of units and structures with these property flags.

Mechanical Structures or units (able to be repaired by Terran SCV, or Terran MULE):

Terran Race:
All Structures (including attachments) are Mechanical (they are all Armored, Mechanical Structure)
SCV (Light, Biological, Mechanical)
MULE (Light, Mechanical)
Hellion (Light, Mechanical)
Siege Tank (Armored, Mechanical)
Thor (Armored, Mechanical, Massive)
Viking (Armored, Mechanical)
Medivac (Armored, Mechanical)
Raven (Light, Mechanical)
Banshee (Light, Mechanical)
Battlecruiser (Armored, Mechanical, Massive)

Zerg Race:
No Structures are Mechanical
No units are Mechanical

Protoss Race:
No Structures are Mechanical (they are all Armored, Structure)
Probe (Light, Mechanical)
Sentry (Light, Mechanical, Psionic)
Stalker (Armored, Mechanical)
Phoenix (Light, Mechanical)
Void Ray (Armored, Mechanical)
Carrier (Armored, Mechanical, Massive)
Observer (Light, Mechanical)
Warp Prism (Armored, Mechanical, Psionic)
Immortal (Armored, Mechanical)
Colossus (Armored, Mechanical, Massive)
Mothership (Armored, Mechanical, Psionic, Massive)

Biological units (able to be repaired by Terran Medivac):

Terran Race:
SCV (Light, Biological, Mechanical)
Marine (Light, Biological)
Marauder (Armored, Biological)
Reaper (Light, Biological)
Ghost (Biological, Psionic)

Zerg Race:
Although Zerg Structures are all Biological, Medivac can only heal "units", NOT Structures.
All Zerg units are Biological and can be healed by Medivac.

Protoss Race:
Zealot (Light, Biological)
High Templar (Light, Biological, Psionic)
Dark Templar (Light, Biological, Psionic)

Weird:
Protoss Race:
Archon (Psionic) is not Biological, nor Mechanical, so it can't be healed or repaired.

Using MULE to heal Mechanical units

Postby edepot on Sat Nov 20, 2010 9:39 pm

Secret Strategy for MULE:

Since the MULE can be dropped from space onto anywhere you have vision on the battlefield, you can actually save up on energy from your Orbital Command(s) and then drop as many MULEs as possible where the action is and put all of them into auto repair mode. They can heal all your mechanical air and ground forces during a tough fight a long distance from your home base. They can even be used to heal your ally's Protoss units that are mechanical too, and if they are Terran (your ally) they can be used to repair units or bunkers and supply depots that are about to break from a rush.

Using Medivac to Heal ally's units

Postby edepot on Sat Nov 20, 2010 11:16 pm

Secret Strategy for Medivac with Zerg ally:

Because ALL Zerg units are Biological, always send Medivacs along with your Zerg ally's troops (including flying ones). EVERY unit (including zerglings) will get healed, and it increases their advantage. If you have finished your Orbital Command upgrade on the Command Center, and your Zerg ally is about to send an attack (works on Protoss and Terran Biological units as well), go ahead and send your Medivacs along with their units. The Medivac will heal all their units.
