Facetime on iPhone 4

Postby edepot on Sat Jul 24, 2010 12:22 am

What many people may not realize is that the iPhone 4's Facetime is not that revolutionary. In fact, it is basically a reinvention of the technology used in Skype (which is the same VOIP/video chat working over Wi-Fi). Skype even supports text messaging built-in. Skype is supported on the iPhone as a free download, and is built-in in all PSP models with the exception of the original PSP Fat. Before Skype, Go!Messenger was released for the PSP (all models) in February, 2008, and worked until March, 2009. Here is the introduction:

Go!Messenger was basically the same as Facetime, allowing video, audio, (but also messaging) using the Go!Cam (a videocam with mic built-in accessory) on the PSP. It worked through a partnership between BT.com and Sony, and all the PSP needed was the Go!Cam accessory and a memory stick to store the software (a free download). Note that after the service was terminated, running the Go!Messenger application and clicking on the "register" link will point you to a bt.com page that leads nowhere. In later PSP firmware, the Go!Messenger icon for launching the Go!Messenger app no longer existed, and was replaced by a Skype app (Slim and later models). Those who are still on firmware 3.90 and pre-5.50 can still run the Go!Messenger app if the memory stick contains the free Go!Messenger app. A copy of the software was uploaded by someone way back then here:

It is interesting that in the second half of the introduction video above, it talked about the Go!Explorer, which happens to resemble the iPhone Maps application (using Google Maps) allowing GPS integration. Of course you needed to purchase the GPS accessory for the PSP.

Looks like ip based video and audio (and messaging) is coming to fruition. If only 3G was a free service, or free wi-fi was available everywhere (instead of just coffee shops and airports) then we can have free ip-based video/audio/text chat for the masses. Even better, make free ip-based wireless access via low frequency technology (like FM frequency) a fundamental right of every citizen in the world. Just like how you expect roads to be freely available for you to walk on without paying to walk on them. It wouldn't be very hard to do either. If you notice, at nighttime there are light poles every few meters on the road. Some countries save on electricity by installing solar panels on each light pole, generating enough stored power to light it up all night long. Imagine integrating a low-frequency ip-based wireless access point on each light pole powered by the sun and you get free broadband access to everyone with access to a road. Of course, make every device capable of talking to this low-frequency signal (similar to a low power version of wi-fi on the order of class 2 bluetooth) and is able to help transmit packets for other devices and you have the future in your hands. Each device can probably utilize remote power charging from those poles too, so it will last forever without recharging the batteries (but this part might be iffy if the power required for this to work is bad for the health). After each device can access the internet freely, the next step would be allowing each device to host any type of server service and we can move the websites and other clouds into each device. Lets face it, requiring people to pay rent or depend on a multi-billion dollar brick and motar building just to put personal things on the internet is too expensive for the masses.

This iPhone 4 has great developed as a phone that could have good features and capabilities. It might be interesting for someone to have this phone. I am planning to have a iPhone 4, that's why I'm looking for some great application of it.
